At Auburn Psychological Wellness Center (APWC), our psychological testing services include neuropsychological assessment (sometimes called neuropsych testing). Neuropsychological testing measures several aspects of how well your brain works. This testing is especially helpful for people who have or may have the following medical concerns:
- Alzheimer’s disease or dementia
- Brain tumors or brain surgery
- Memory loss
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Parkinson’s Disease or other movement disorders
- Transient Ischemic Attack or Stroke
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
When is Neuropsychological Testing Recommended?
Neuropsychological testing may be recommended by a primary care provider, neurologist, or other healthcare provider if they notice one or more of the following changes. Clients may also self-refer or be referred by family members in these cases.
- Change in short-term memory, like forgetting what was just said or asking questions repeatedly.
- Decrease in attention and/or concentration.
- Difficulty with managing bills or finances.
- Losing items or getting lost easily.
- Poor judgement or decision-making.
- Problems with communication, such as with speaking, finding words, or carrying on a conversation.
- Problems with recognizing familiar people (e.g., family or friends).
- Trouble with staying organized or finishing tasks.
- Unexpected change in personality or mental wellbeing.
- Visual-spatial concerns, like difficulty drawing, using a map, or driving.
What to Expect
Our neuropsychological assessments are conducted by a licensed psychologist. We start with a clinical interview to learn more about your concerns and history. You will also complete one or more psychological tests with the psychologist. Because of our comprehensive assessment process, you may need to attend more than one testing session. Most testing must be conducted in person. Types of tests and length of testing depend on the question(s) you seek to answer, but generally address cognitive or intellectual functioning, personality, emotional functioning, mental health symptoms, attention/concentration, and/or academic achievement. Your assessment provider will compile the results into a comprehensive report, with recommendations, that will be shared with you during a feedback meeting.
